Asbestos Related Illnesses: What Treatments are Available?

By Jennifer Bromslow

There are several different types of illness associated with human contact with asbestos. The three main types of illness are asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. Unfortunately, there are no known cures for these illnesses, yet there are several forms of treatments available to relieve the symptoms of these potentially deadly diseases.

Asbestosis is often thought of as the most common asbestos related disease and the condition often develops after a long period of exposure to asbestos. Symptoms usually include shortness of breath and chest pains. The first thing to ensure is that there is no risk of irritants entering the lungs and causing further damage to the lung lining. Smokers are at a much higher risk of developing lung cancer if they have been diagnosed with asbestosis, so there is even more reason for them to give up.

Lung cancer is perhaps the most deadly of the conditions and there are several forms of treatment that can be taken out depending on the size of the tumour as well as how far the cancer has spread. The type of treatment that is best suited to the case depends on the severity of the case, how early it was detected and what the health of the patient is otherwise. Surgery is an option that can be taken in extreme cases, but this really depends on the severity of the case. Radiotherapy is a form of treatment that uses targets the malignant tumour with a high dose of radiation in order to destroy the cancerous cells. Chemotherapy uses cytotoxic medications on the affected area, in order to kill the cancerous cells.

Mesothelioma is an extremely dangerous condition that gives the patient shortness of breath and severe chest pains. One common for of treatment for mesothelioma is surgery to remove part of or the entire lung. In some cases, part of the diaphragm is removed to neutralise the threat.

As with most types of illness, chances of survival are greater when the condition is detected early. The earlier that the disease is detected, the more effective the treatment will be. It is highly advisable that you seek screening if you believe that you have been in contact with asbestos at some point in your life. Even if it was several years ago, you should still seek help as symptoms can take several years to materialise.
