Illegal asbestos tipping a huge problem in the UK

By Mohammed Middleton

Every year in the UK there are a number of cases in which people illegally dispose of asbestos, which is highly dangerous and irresponsible. Anyone who partakes in this kind of illegal activity could face serious repercussions from the law. And quite rightly so; there are a number of reasons that people choose to tip asbestos illegally, yet whatever the reason, the perpetrator shows a complete disregard for fellow human beings who could become exposed to dangerous asbestos fibres.

Police in the UK are clamping down on this type of illegal activity by imposing tough sentences on anyone found guilty of this. There are a number of reasons why people run the risk of illegally tipping asbestos, yet whatever the reason, it pays a complete disregard for human life and should therefor carry an appropriate punishment.

Asbestos can be found in many forms when it is used in construction, but one common form that it is found when removed from buildings is in the form of corrugated cement. This is generally quite fragile and if it is broken, the dangerous asbestos fibres can become airborne and inhaled. This is when they can be hazardous to health.

Disposing of asbestos requires a number of strict regulations to be adhered to in the eyes of the law. It must be disposed of in a regulated area and this can often be costly and time consuming. As such, many people take the cheaper and more 'convenient' option of dumping it illegally. Any unsuspecting person could investigate what the material is and inadvertently expose themselves to the dangerous fibres.

If asbestos fibres are inhaled, there are a number of respiratory conditions that can occur as a result. Conditions such as mesothelioma often result in a great deal of suffering and it seems scary that people are actually willing to put people at risk of developing these kinds of illnesses just for the sake of saving some money. If you need some advice on how to dispose of asbestos properly, you should contact your local council.
