Prevention, Signs And Treatment Of Pleural Plaques

By Sam Jones

Pleural plaques are localized scars that are caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. The scars are made up of a deposit of collagen tissues that are as a result of inflammation of the lung cells. This condition takes a long time to develop and this is often roughly 20-40 years after one has been subjected to asbestos exposure.

The scarring is often found in the diaphragm but can also be on the rid cage though not common. It has been indicated that almost half of those who got exposed to such filaments contracted this complication; duration of exposure and frequency not a factor. It can only be caused by asbestos exposure and not any other thing and hence the preventive measure has been to avoid any contact with asbestos.

Research has indicated that almost 50% of those who have been exposed to any level of asbestos are likely to develop this lung complication. Since it can only be caused by asbestos fibers, the preventive strategy is often straight forward; avoiding exposure to asbestos. Following the abolition of such fibers in the construction industry, it is most probable that the current cases are the last rampant wave of infection since the exposure was 20-40 years ago.

It is not cancerous. However, it is always associated with other malignant types of lung infections such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and pleural effusion. It can be caused when an individual inhales the asbestos fibers. The fibers being small enough, easily go past the filtration mechanism of the lung.

It however can never develop to a malignant type. It is often caused when asbestos fibers are inhaled and since the fibers are so tiny, they are able to go past the natural measure of lungs for filtration and thus embed on the lung tissues and cause inflammation.

Pleural plague occurs with the slightest exposure to such fibers and the frequency of the exposure does not matter. Hence they are always present in the lungs of patients suffering from the diseases due to asbestos exposure. This complication can be treated by the administration of anti-inflammation drugs and oxygen provision and is not highly lethal like malignant types.
