Tips to get a safe tan

By Sean Bittern

Most people like spending time in the sun to get that lovely tan to their skin. Then there are others who are aware that the sun is the best possible source of vitamin D and can help with alleviating stress, especially in conjunction with supplements. You could have your own reasons for sunbathing, however, the truth is that the sun's rays could be more damaging to your skin than beneficial.

There are two types of ultraviolet radiation emitted by the rays of the sun. UVA rays are the ones that give you that beautiful tan and the UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn.

You probably already know that sunlight is the best source of one of the anti-aging vitamins, Vitamin D. So, if you completely stay out of the sun, you may lose out on this essential nutrient. The best thing to do is to get the best possible sun protection that protects your skin from the harmful UVB rays and yet allows you to enjoy activities in the sun.

The best protection is, of course, sunscreen lotions and creams. They should be of at least 15 SPF and you should be wearing it even on cloudy days or even when you are planning to stay inside your home. A moisturizer with sunscreen is also an option that you can consider.

A higher SPF means that the sunscreen offers more defenses against the harmful UV rays. So, if you are planning on spending the day out in direct sunlight, make sure to use a sunscreen with an SPF as high as 30. Don't forget to apply the sunscreen thickly and frequently. Also, apply every two hours of being under direct sunlight.

Getting a safe and good tan is quite easy these days. Although, doctors do argue there is no such thing as a safe tan. Sun lamps and tanning beds are quite good products here to help you get a radiant glow.

Tans are also available in the form of sprays and lotions that you can easily use to get a glow on the skin. However, keep in mind that just because you have a tan, it doesn't mean that you are protected against the harmful effects of the sun. So, make sure to wear sunscreen.

If lack of exposure to the sun is causing you to be deficient in the essential anti-aging nutrient, you can buy vitamin D supplements. Containing vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol, these are perfect for those who are not exposed to the sun too much.
